How long has it been since you’ve been able to play? Whether it’s a sport, or game, or unstructured free time, making time to play is an important aspect of your fitness journey. It allows us to put our fitness to use, and also makes us think a little bit to improve.

This weekend I had the opportunity to play a game called Spike Ball. The rules are similar to doubles volleyball. In teams of 2, you have 3 hits to spike the ball. Hitting the net is a change of possession, just like hitting the ball over the net in volleyball.

Anyway, it was a new game that required me to run around and use the fitness that we spend so long developing in the gym. Playing a new game also required me to think more than playing other games that we are more familiar with. Playing a new game can also increase cognitive load and improve overall brain function and health.

CrossFit’s Fitness in 100 words ends with the line “regularly learn and play new sports.”

I challenge you to spend more time outside of the gym using your fitness and putting it to the test. We are fortunate enough to live in a very active city. We can go outside and play sports, basketball, football, cycling, surfing.

Pick up a new sport this summer. Learn how to surf, play volleyball, or join a sports league. I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised at how well you do AND how much fun you have.

The gym is a great place to build fitness, but get out and do even more!
