Scott Smith recaps the US National Masters Weightlifting Championships in Savannah, GA, April 1st – 3rd, 2011:

This past weekend Tony and Scott S. went down to Savannah and participated in the National meet with over 200 other competitors.

Men and women from ages 35 – 84 were there to compete for the championship in their age and weight classes.

Those old guys and gals put up some serious numbers.

TONY WON THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP! He snatched 99kg (218lbs) and Clean&Jerked 119kg (262lbs).  He was in a tight battle with several experienced weightlifters but hit his third jerk to win the 94kg class by 26 lbs!  With an injured shoulder, he was way off his PRs, but put on his big boy britches and went out and hit 4 of 6 lifts.

Scott hit [he nailed them!  -t.] his lifts with a snatch of 52kg (115lbs) and a jerk of 76kgs (168lbs) for a total of 128kg, both meet PRs for him.  Scott got third place in the 55-59 yr old 77kg class but vows to hit bigger numbers in the future.

So far from Wilmington Weightlifting Club, Tony and Julie G have qualified for the Pan-Am Championships in July.

Both Tony and Scott trained hard and just as importantly, showed up.  There are a lot of guys out there who could potentially beat them, but they didn’t believe in themselves or were too busy to put in the time and go to the meet.  “90% of life is showing up”!

Crossfit Wilmington has the talent to win a national team championship.  Only one crossfit gym in the nation beat us and we only had two competitors.  We need more of you “experienced” lifters (35+) to come lift with us as Wilmington Weightlifting Club.  We can easily be a force on a national level.  For both men and women, it is fun, fulfilling and far easier than you think.

The next Oly lifting class begins this coming Monday, April 11th at 6 o’clock.  ALL AGES are welcome to be part of this.  The next event is the Bull City Barbell Open in Durham on May 21.

Scott, I hope this doesn’t embarrass you but you looked the best out of all the guys on the podium with you. Best body composition by far. Which is the beauty of CFW, mass strength without looking bulky and unnatural.

Thanks for the love guys! Whitney, I noticed the same thing. It was easy to spot the crossfitters. They were fitter by far. Tony and I commented that Crossfit could make a huge difference in the sport.
