The Carolina CrossFit Challenge was yesterday and CrossFit Wilmington was well represented.  Its hard for me to explain how awesome it was to see our competitors lay it all out against NC’s fittest.
Before I get into all details of the competition, I have to tell you, just as amazing as our competitors were, so were the folks that just came out to support our guys and girls.  CFW had 21 competitors in the event.  But we had just about as many there to watch the fun.  Maura, Jonathan, Brandy and Scott P., Bridgette, Esko and Melody, Chris F., Rachel, Nick, Em, JP, Amy, Mrs. Pat, Jake (we claim ya now Bro), Drew, Andrew, Jinna and Kathleen (still ours!) went all the way to Durham just to support their friends in a little friendly CrossFit competition.  You guys rock and the your friends will not forget your support anytime soon, nor will all the other attendees.
I had no less than ten people tell me if they were to leave their gym, they’d want to move to Wilmington to join our bunch.  Two of them were other affiliate owners!  That says so much about how you guys are seen by others.  The same thing happened at the regionals.  You all are so friendly and welcoming.  I was so proud to see that if we had no athletes in a heat, or our athletes had finished their workout, you all cheered for other affiliate’s guys and girls.  It’s that kind of stuff that makes you all stand out as a group.  It’s our way and I’m proud to see it in action.
If you attended the Competition, either in support or you competed, post comments about watch you experienced.
Greg of CF Durham briefs the competitors.
Greg, Dave, and CF Durham did a great job with The Challenge.
An event like this isn’t so easy to manage and they pulled it off without a hitch.
Great job and thanks to them!
"Champions do not become champions when they win the event, but
in the hours, weeks, months, and years they
spend preparing for it.  The victorious performance is the
demonstration of their character." – T. Alan Armstrong
Julie readies for WOD 1.  Meagan getting pre-WOD instructions from her judge, Michelle B., of CF Ft. Bragg.  Dawn smiles…  I’m guessing she new WOD 1 would go her way.
Can anyone tell me why this is such a bad*ss pic?
CFW had 21 competitors at the challenge, 5 guys in this heat. Dan, Caleb, IP, Justin, and Aaron (just outside the frame).  We had an anthlete in almost every heat.
IP reminds us of the quote… "
Quantity is its own quality." – J. Stalin
All eyes were on Josh when started WOD 1.  His first two minutes he "close grip snatched"
the barbell like it was a plastic movie prop!
This is what admiration looks like.  Nathan watches Dad crush it.
Thomas and Scott S.
In the left pic Kent is smiling and still thinking he can beat Zach.
Right picture…   reality has slapped Kent up side his nugget!
Seriously, Kent rocked out a 9th overall finish in this thing.  He’s smaller, lighter, and
quite a bit older than the athletes he competed against and beat.
Always a pleasure seeing Kent and was great meeting Lisa.
Rest and recovery between workouts.
How can three of the toughest chicas around be so cute?
A few months ago Julie G. couldn’t do a pull up.
Since she’s attended every class she could,
spent extra time with our instructors,
and tuned her diet to fuel her progress.  Julie travels
all the time, but doesn’t miss workouts.  She does them at
hotels and visits other CF affiliates.  Her progress is a
testament to what a dedicated person can do with this program.
Yesterday she competed side by side with Carolina’s best and
represented CFW with class.

I'm home and I am TIRED. The competition was great, an unbelievable amount of work and prep must have gone into it. It was amazing to see our "sea of faces" in the crowd. Thanks to all of you for supporting, Em and Rachel for getting me my beer, Thomas for the "peptalk" Julie and Tony for the coaching, Ron for calming my nerves…the countless others of you who cheered tirelessly for all of us. I am so proud to be a member of this gym.

  2. drew says:

All I know is.. the quote of the day came from Ilario while cheering on No Good: "Ron use that parachute tramp stamp to fly your ass on top of that box". That event was amazing, and multiple times the entire gym fell quiet when we started counting our athletes last reps! And the ENTIRE gym cheered Scott on as he finished that second workout, that, my friends, was truly the epitome of what I think this was all about!!

  3. Andrew says:

Everybody did an awesome job. The effort was amazing. Proud to be associated with all of you. Good to see so many faces (and a few new ones) after being gone for the last couple of months. Hopefully I'll get back down to the box before the end of December. For those that may have been hesitant about taking some of T's OLY classes, you shouldn't be. CFW, as a whole, had form head and shoulders above the majority of the competitors. Great work.

  4. Scott S says:

What an experience yesterday! I am so proud to be part of the CFW community. Every competitor from our box got 100% support from the team. It was amazing to see and hear us supporting Crossfitters from other boxes as well. The thing we all demonstrated is that we DO NOT QUIT and we love Crossfit and anyone willing to put on the shirt. For al those who gave encouragement to me, THANK YOU. For all those who did not participate, please sign up next year. Don't worry about hanging with the big dogs, because showing up is what it is all about. Remember when I wrote about those special days that stick out in your memory with crystal clarity? Yesterday was one of those days. Thanks, t. and Ju for making this happen.

I had an unbelievable time yesterday! we were a GRANDE presence at the challenge and people were impressed! My highlights…Dawn KILLING it all(we knew she would) Meagan deadlifting 155# 45 times!!! Maria's PUSH…man that girl has got some FIGHT! the entire crowd cheering on Scott to finish those Toes to Bar,Josh using 135# like it was a broom stick and the crowd in a low roar saying "daaaaaamn look at that guy" Zach and his LEGENDARY finish to take 3rd in the final WOD buy pulling out 15 Thrusters in a row, and CFW cheering HICK-ory Kent on at the finish of that final WOD and high fives that followed and last but not least Taylor's bday cake for Josh and LOVING it SO much we ate it without bowls or utensils!
So here i am, didn't place in top 10 (got pretty close though) but still on top of the world because I got to watch 3 of our girls in the final WOD and know that of those that didn't need to scale the 1st wod… ALL CFW girls RANKED top 15 and placed topped 18! The men were right there too! Zach in top 10 Caleb Sensei and Josh were real close! But no matter rank or times PEOPLE knew WHO we were and WHAT we are about. and that is CFW.. athletes with class and skill!

  6. Sensei says:

You know the times in the movie that jerk you tears? The ones that come when you see the hero of the movie DIG DEEPER, GO PAST ALL (previous) BOUNDARIES, DO WHAT IS RIGHT and REQUIRED, AND FIGHT LIKE HELL AGAINST ALL ODDS? I saw COUNTLESS instances of this all day yesterday, I felt those tears (and am fighting them now) when our counting for Taylors reps drowned out the sounds of the THE ENTIRE CITY OF DURHAM, When Megan (at 105lb) MONSTERED each rep of that 155lb DL and viciously stripped her shirt off to reveal "CFW, YOU WANT MORE…." written on her body!! Scott….SCOTT, WOW,…just wow!! I stand humbled. The absolute skill and H E A R T of our group, OUR friends, OUR athletes is nothing to take for granted! I pushed that first WoD harder than anything I've pushed in a long time, Tony, you standing there telling me what was needed helped me so much! I must tell you that that last rep was EVERY SINGLE THING I HAD and it was for you and all that you've given us! I know that I can't even begin to tell each of you each and every little moment of clarity and closeness that I felt with each of you, but I hope you know how much you all mean to this "lanky ninja". Abby, thank you for catching my shirt! Cameron, thank you for all of your help. That 2nd WoD would have been 3 minutes slower without your help on Toes to Bar, and with my double unders I was actually pissed I didn't make top ten CAUSE I WANTED TO DO DU'S!!!! Meagan, JD, Dawn, Taylor, Maria, Zach, Daniel, MY STUDENT AND FRIEND DAN THE MAN, Rachel, Jina, Scott, Scott, Drew, Esko, Melody, Julie, Julie, TONY, ILARIO, RON, Fitz, JAY JAY, Thomas, Emily, Josh, AMY, Jill, …..and I know I'm missing out on somebody….. THANK YOU SO MUCH!! FREAKING AWESOME!!

  7. t. says:

I'm finally posting pics! Sorry for the delay. It's been a lazy, rainy morning. I'll post more all this week.
On another note… did anyone pick up my black CFW zippered hoody in Durham?

  8. Meagan says:

So as I try to move today and everything hurts, I feel proud of what we all did yesterday. Whether you were a participant or spectator, we went there and made a name for ourselves. Thank you to everyone who had confidence in me on that second wod. I appreciate the push…I really didn't think I could do it, but now I know I can. It is hard to not sit and write a book about all of the amazing things that happened yesterday, but two stand out in my mind. The first is after Scott S finished the last WOD and he walked up to me and said, "Meagan, you know what CFW has that you want? Unconditional Love." Scott, you are so right. It was evident how much love we have for one another yesterday. We are all part of an amazing family that pushes us to places we never thought we could go. They pick us up when we have fallen and they give us a boost when we need just a little help. We should all feel so lucky. The second is when 4 of our family members made it to the top 20. They had 5 minutes to warm up and set their mind to fight through their final WOD. Zack, Dawn, Maria, and Taylor…you all inspire me in so many ways. You took what little you had left from a long day and you rocked that WOD. I am so proud of you all! I am proud of everyone who competed. CFW Rocks baby. No doubt about it. Thank you to all of you who drove to Raleigh to cheer everyone on. I don't know if I could have made it without all of the cheers, the love, the support. Lastly, Tony and Julie. We could not have done this without you. I know you both must be proud. We all love you and are so thankful to be a part of your family. Way to go team!!!!

  9. Tracy says:

So proud of you athletes! Many talents and abilities were competing and you guys once again showed the Crossfit world how to do it with class! CFW is an amazing TEAM! Together Each Achieves More!! Nice job of supporting and cheering from the spectator team! Keep posting comments and the pics coming! Makes me feel like I was there with you! I was cheering from Charleston! Maura kept me udpdated!! Way to go CFW!!

  10. Jen S. says:

Congrats to EVERYONE that went to Raleigh yesterday…you are ALL #1 in my book! I could feel the energy all the way back here sitting in my little spa wishing that I was there competing and cheering!!! Thank you so much to Maura and Daniel for keeping me posted on the ass kickings. CFW ROCKS!!! I am so proud of my CFWF! (Crossfit Wilmington Family!)

  11. Em says:

So proud of everybody from yesterday, competitors and spectators. While I was bummed I couldn't be out there competing with you guys, I loved being there watching and cheering you all on to greatness. I was amazed to look and see how much support we brought in comparison to other gyms. I heard lots of people comment on how supportive our group was of everyone, not just our crew. Best statement of the day (other than IP's statement of encouragement to RNG already mentioned by Drew) was at the end of the first heat w/ the ladies…Scott Smith turned and commented on how the emotion brought tears to the eyes. So true. Hope I wasn't TOO loud yesterday, I tend to forget how loud I yell, but my throat is paying for it today! Taylor, thank you so much for Josh's cake, amazing as always! t and Julie, thank you guys for helping create the beasts that are CFW!!

  12. ju says:

Wow, I am at work looking at the pics and trying to get through the comments without crying. Words can't descibe what I felt or am still feeling from yesterday. The energy and emotion coming from our team was so powerful. I wish everyone could have been there yesterday to see the determination and drive on our athletes' faces. It is something I will never forget. And let me not forget to mention all of thoes that drove up to support. I couldn't believe it! I don't know how we got so lucky to have so many great people in one box, but I am so very greatful! Thank you to everyone, athletes and spectators for representing so well.

  13. Julie G. says:

Wow! I had such a great day yesterday. Watching everyone dig deep for just one more rep or CFW Family cheering everyone even after our affiliate finished a WOD. It was all truly inspiring. I have posted about 64 pics on Facebook so hit me up (Julie Glover) I also have alot of really good video, but I am having technical difficulties trying to merge the clips…stay tuned. If your WOD was right before or after mine, I might not have gotten a picture of you:( Sorry I am sure Julie got pictures of everyone as well as constant coaching everyone in a 9 hour event (she is a machine). Thank you to everyone that cheered all of us on. It really meant alot.

  14. ilario says:

So proud and honored to be part of this team. I echo the heartwarming sentiments that have been shared by my friends and fellow athletes. There were some really amazing performances and everyone of you was/is an inspiration in your own way.
I'm particularly proud of my RNG. After being sidelined for a month and trying to row his way to Alaska, RNG brought his "A" game! Great Showing MB. And Zach, way to come back form a muscle pull that would have caused anyone else to quit. You continue to be among my heroes (but its getting crowded with gals like Meagan, and guys like Scott…) honestly, everyone deserves a special shout out. Love all my peeps.

  15. kent says:

You guys are so lucky to have coach's like Tony and Julie. Lisa and I love all of ya'll. In the final Wod i heard my wife along with people from CFW screaming for me and Zach. They would yell come on Zach come on Kent. I wish we lived closer to all of ya'll. Lisa and i agree ya'll are like our second family. I would like to give a big FU to Taylor and Dawn who after the it was all said and done They decided to go ahead and kick me while i was down by saying. "your wife is so beautiful i cant believe that she is YOUR wife" Thanks ladies!!! Zach if you're missing a chalk bag i think i got it. My sincerest thanks and love to you all the Stameys

  16. Josh says:

Words cannot express the feeling felt when watching friends, family and loved ones go out and perform, succeed and leave everything on the floor. I'm proud of each and every one of you that went to Durham and left everything on the floor, including all those spectators who woke up with hoarse voices this morning. Thank you all for the birthday wishes and the best cake EVER (Sweet T)!!!!

  17. t. says:

Answer: Her veins are coming out of neck and fists are clinched. It looks like Taylor is about to rip someone apart… yet, she's kind of smiling.

  18. ilario says:

It was wonderful to Meet Lisa, although Dawn and Taylor called that one: Lisa, honey, what were you thinking! Seriously Kent, you showed us how its done on lots of levels. The good news, is that when they make the "Kent" action figure, you can share clothes! I'll hit you on email man, be safe and don't be a stranger.

  19. Nick says:

After waking up today and not having a voice haha I just want to say I have never seen more heart or drive from anyone. I am proud to be part of Crossfit Wilmington and to have experienced what I did during the competition. Congrats to everyone, you should all be very proud of yourselves because I am proud of each of you. The future is going to be great!!!

  20. No GOOD says:

What else can you say after a day like that and all the posts! Some words come to mind, determination, fearless, perseverance, pain, and Strength Beyond Strength!!! First Scott Smith you have blessed us all with you positive attitude and you ability to face any challenge. Thing is its not the challenges that come your way, you go looking for them. Thank you my friend! To our beautiful CFW Spartan WOMEN!!! Your grace and performace out shined all!! You are all so amazing. Dawn you beat Carolins by one rep faster, I think this is huge because this in not the first time they have faced each other. Maria, all you wanted was a beer but you had to continue to shine you are incredible! Taylor, I know you didnt want to do that 3d round but you killed it! Its funny to watch you get mad then smile as you complete the WOD GRACE! Abby your energy and go go attitude was AWESOME!!! you seemed to have your finger on numbers at all times. Julie G, you guys should have seen Julies face when we looked at the ranking and see saw that she was 14th. Her eyes lit up. ASHe asked me is this right, am I that high….Yes Julie G that is you! Impressive, I wish I had taken a picture of your face, I have not seen instant happiness like that in a long time! Megan…the wall and barriers that you demolished yesterday! You khnow you have set the standard, now more scaling! I belive that you were the smallest competitor, and in my opinon the biggest heart!
Thank you for all those that drove down and supported us, your energy gave as strength! Rachel great job taking pictures thank you! To my brothers in arms. What an honor to have engaged in this form of battle with you. Kent great job you are difinatly in what we call the OMS (old man strength) Club , and i concur with our girls, you got luck with you wife, maybe you met her when you had hair….Zack its coming, as with everything you have to work that much harder, you'll get it! I have not done a RX'd WOD in 6 weeks. I was not sure what all the rowing was going to do for me. ANd I think I got my answer. I was terrified before the first WOD, Afraid and Scared….afraid of the unknown of competing scared of not being able to complete the WOD. It took till the 6 min mark in the first WOD where I actually felt calm. But getting there I was Afraid and Scared. The fear gave me strength. Being afraid gave me courage, and without courage there is no entry into the gates of Val Halla! I wanted to get 60 reps on the 1st WOD and I got 60. I wanted to be done under 10 min on the 2d and I did that. IP and Tony, i heard you and thank you. Also I kept looking at the 300 poster on the wall. Competing has given me this amazing renewed felling. For everyone there, thank you for an amazing day. CFW is a family funny how this has happened. You know what is the coolest thing of all… THIS IS GOING TO HAPPEN AGAIN AND AGAIN ETC… I will be there every step of the way!!! 2010 BABY!!!! I love you guys!!!!

  21. Zach says:

I would like to start off by saying thank you so much to everyone who was yelling at me and pushing me through everything i did yesterday. Everyone who competed yall killed it. It was so cool to have a CFW person in every heat. It just showed everyone how bad we want it. We have the best bond that i have seen from any gym and pretty any other association. Love you all!! And Kent you killed it yesterday glad we could do that last one beside eachother. It was my pleasure man. Thank you tony for your words of inspiration b4 my last 15 yesterday. It pulled me through. thank you em for being my nurse on the go! haha

  22. No GOOD says:

Great video Julie G I got chicken skin again watching it!!! One thing I will difenatly do before the next comp is make sure I go to Prima and get a spray tan ha!!

  23. Julie G. says:

Ok…Here is the Video upload. Quality was better before uploading. I will burn it to disk and leave at desk CFW in case someone wants to add cool music and edit it. At least this gives the people that were not able to be there an opportunity to experience it.

  24. Maura says:

Congratulations to all who competed yesterday! I am so proud of you, proud to call you friends, family and amazing athletes. I had a great time cheering, screaming, laughing, smiling and clapping yesterday, it was a all around great day! It was breath taking to see CFW take up an entire corner of the gym, cheering our hearts out for our friends on the floor. We were heard loud and clear and I'm so happy to be apart of this gym! I played two hockey games this weekend after not playing in a game for 6 months. I used to think you had to play hockey to be in "hockey shape". Nothing could prepare me to skate hard for 60 minutes besides actually skating and playing. Well this weekend my legs felt great, it wasn't until my last shift in the third period when I really started to feel fatigue. I was out of breath every time I sat on the bench but had caught my breath and ready to get back out there when my line was up. That is a result of what we do here at Crossfit and how we train. It's a result of how our amazing trainers push us and teach us. It's a result of the people here who inspire me to walk through those doors 5 days a week. This weekend I felt stronger, I didn't get knocked off the puck as much, my endurance lasted me throughout the game, and I learned that shorter harder shifts are better and more worthwhile than longer, half ass shifts, no matter how bad you want to stay on that ice. Thank you all for making my 2009 a great year, thank you for the friendships, thank you for pushing me, helping me and teaching me on a daily basis. I am out of town this week for work and home to Boston next week for Christmas so if I don't see you at Sandra's tacky attire party have a very safe and happy Christmas.

  25. Justin K says:

This Saturday was an amazing experience! To see everyone compete and those who did not compete. But still showed up. It goes to show you how CFW really is a family that cares about everyone. This is the only competition I have ever been to when one person finished their WOD they went and cheered and helped another competitor. On my last WOD I was unable to finish. I felt all alone out there and then when I looked I had all 4 guys in my heat from CFW right beside me pushing me and helping me. That was the greatest feeling knowing that they where there for me when I needed them the most. Every time I think about this challenge I am more amazed. 3 out of 5 girls in the top 10, My baby dead lifting 155. All the guys who gave it their all and would not stop. Zack pulling out 15 thrusters in a row. The only other words I can think of now are WAIT TILL NEXT YEAR!!!!!!! A big thanks to Tony I would not be where I am today without your push and training.

  26. Dawn says:

First, I would like to commend everyone for their camaraderie. Thank you all so much for all the yelling and cheering even though on the last WOD I looked at you all and said, “I KNOW.” The lack of sleep and being somewhat exhausted from the two previous workouts, I would like to apologize and express my appreciation and we are all very lucky to have each and every one of you. Everyone this weekend did such an amazing job, everyone should be proud of his or her performances, you all showed North Carolina what Crossfit Wilmington is all about. That is that we are not only a gym that has astounding athlete, but we are a family that sticks together. I am so proud to call you all my family.

t…to answer your question…ALL FOR IT!! Determined to get better and participate in one of the competitions…probably won't go far, just want to add it to my "bucket list"…Julie G…loved the video, great footage. And again, awesome job to all this weekend! Proud to call you "family"!
