It’s hard to believe that I am writing this post. I want to start by giving some history of my life so to understand why this is so exciting to me. In High School I was quite athletic. I was recruited in football by most every major college on the east cost. At 18 years of age, I was 6’2” and 190 pounds. I had a 425lb squat and a 500lb dead lift and could two-hand dunk a basketball. I ended up going to college on a Football and Baseball Scholarship and then switched to baseball full time after my freshman year. I was Drafted in the 1987 Professional baseball draft by the St Louis Cardinals and played with the organization for 2 seasons in the minor leagues. (Oh how I wish that I would have had CFW then). I pretty much grew up eating anything I wanted and ice cream and cookies were my vice. As I left competitive sports, my ideal weight floated to 225 or 230. As I got older, and into my late 30s and early 40s, it became difficult to sustain this weight. To keep my weight in that range, I would have to clean up my eating 50% of the time and exercise my butt off.(literally). I would exercise a little more and get my weight back down. As I grew older, my optimum weight rose to 240 ,because I was too lazy to go down further. It became more and more difficult to keep it off. I did have the advantage of being a “big guy” so with the right shirt and Jeans, I looked “in Shape” But go with me to the beach and as I took my shirt off, oh how the multitude of sins were revealed! I joined CFW the week it opened and at that time weighed in at 260. I will never forget that the first work out was “Filthy 50” I made it the”Fat Mans 5” and still thought I was going to die. I eventually dropped my weight to about 235 but I was killing myself 6 days a week working out. Since I just had to have my cheat meals, I basically made every excuse I could to eat “on special occasions” a bunch of junk food and then have to clean up my diet for a week or two to recover from the one night binge. I used every weight loss method known to man. If it’s been written in a book or online, I have done it. Then I would get to “MY” ideal weight and then go right back to my old ways and head right back up. I emphasized “MY” ideal weight because I decided what I was willing to live with (weight wise); not what my body was willing to live with.
Fast forward now to 2012. All the weight I had lost in the first years of CrossFit was now back. It had gotten to the point where I was embarrassed to tell anyone if I had lost weight because by this point I had said it to Tony and Josh so many times that they had to think I was an idiot; or that I had lost hundreds of pounds! Truth is that I have maybe even lost 1,000, but I gained 1,050! Up and down and up and down.
As I went from one soreness to another, I finally woke up one morning in mid-February completely disgusted with myself. I could no longer “just work out more and harder to lose weight.” I had my body mass done and realized I was 258 pounds and over 25% body fat. That meant that the old 190 pound athlete was now obese. Clint was still alive and kicking, but he was carrying around almost 60lbs of unnecessary weight. So I walked out into the gym grabbed a 45lb weight and a 10lb and a 5lb and carried it around for about 4 or 5 minutes, I did some step ups on the 12” black square and after about 6 of them I was burning. Then it hit me that this is what I am carrying around every day. It’s time to make a change; so I did! I started with weight watchers and did real well for about 2 weeks. I lost 8 pounds but as always got sick of counting everything and I was still eating bread and sugar and still tired all day and feeling like crap. So I was sitting in Josh’s office with Tony standing at the door and told them of my dilemma. I am sure both of them were rolling their eyes inside thinking “here we go again with Clint losing weight.” Then Tony challenged me to read a book called “Wheat Belly”. In one word, unbelievable! I realized what I was doing to my self and my body by eating crap. Since reading the book I went off weight watchers and calorie counting. I basically only eat meat and colored vegetables. I take Magnesium, Zinc and fish oils and BCAA’s before and after a workout. I have lost a total of 22 lbs thus far. I did realize a truth about a recent article though. My weight leveled out about a month ago and started going back up. It kind of freaked me out a bit but then after looking at my diet I was eating 4 or 5 handfuls of nuts each day. I dropped that to 1 or 2 small handfuls and the weight started dropping off again. According to the numbers I will probably end up around 215 depending on the muscle mass I build when I start back. I have no certain goal other than to eat clean the rest of my life. I also want to add that because of a pinched SI joint for the last 4 months, I have basically not been working out or doing any sort of cardio except for a few pushups and pull ups here and there.
I am now 100% healed and am started back to CFW last week. I will tell you the first day back the WOD was “Fight Gone Bad.” It lived up to its name; should’ve been called “train wreck”. But none the less, I was able to walk out of the gym with no next day soreness and NOT have to say, “I need to clean up my diet.” I was proud to say, “I just need to get back in the game.” I want to thank Tony and the entire crew for taking an interest in the overall health of its members. I have struggled with eating for a long time. If you are playing around and trying to see how much you can cheat to live with “YOUR” ideal weight, then stand in front of the mirror tomorrow and tell yourself that you are lazy, weak and are being controlled by food. It is your idol and you worship it. That was what I did and that day is when my life changed. Don’t get me wrong, I was blessed with a wife who can eat anything she wants, rarely works out, and still weighs 110lbs. She only weighs 5 pounds more than when we got married 25 years ago. She is 49 years old and still has muscle tone. We still go out to every restaurant and she buys what she likes to eat. Many of you just felt a hate toward my wife and I understand. It’s been a burden to bare for many years. Seriously though, I have to eat clean on purpose and no matter where you are you can eat clean. Even at a pizza joint order a salad and a works pizza. You can eat the toppings and throw the crust away. It will go to “the waste can or the waist line” and either way you get no benefit from it and the first one is easier to live with. I realized that when I put a bite of “crap” non-quality food in my mouth that the enjoyment last between 30-60 seconds. The consequences last for days or weeks. GET SERIOUS AND GET FIT!!
